An Update to our SKL Friends
Convid English.jpg

Covid-19 has impacted all of us, forcing each of us to do our part to combat this unprecedented pandemic. Certainly, this has changed the focus of School for Kids in Lao Inc.(SKL) for the immediate future and we wanted to bring you up-to-date on SKL activities. As previously reported to you we decided to postpone our annual Taste of Laos Banquet which was originally scheduled to take place on May 2, 2020. As yet we are unsure when this can be held and it may have to wait until 2021. Laos, like everywhere, is in lockdown with schools and unessential services closed. SKL remains committed to Khonevat village and project 10.  We are continuing to ensure we have funding in place to commence with the build as soon as it is safely possible.     Dealing with Covid-19 has probably been one of the toughest things any of us have encountered. We hope that you are all practicing self-care along with handwashing and physical distancing!  We will continue to update you on our activities as the situation changes.

Thank you for your continued commitment to SKL and the students in Laos.

Keep healthy and keep safe.

Nong Chung School Inauguration
Nongchung Before After(F).jpg

With the school children and villagers joining in SKL was pleased to open it’s 9th project – Nong Chung School on Monday, 9th December, 2019.  Also joining us for this special occasion was several of our donors from all over the world:  From Malaysia Hong Yan Tan & Kang Mi Shel; from Australia Chittakone & Maythong; from Laos Phouvong and from Canada Bounlay Chanthavong.  Children, parents, teachers, villagers, and donors were delighted with the 5-classroom school which can accommodate 100 students in grades 1-5, and has sanitary washrooms, running water and electricity.

Nong Chung is located in the Boun district, Khammouane province which is a 5-hour drive south-east of the capital Vientiane.

PROJECT 9 – NONG CHUNG SCHOOL COMPLETED!

Located in the Hinboun district, Khammouane provide which is a 5-hour drive south-east of Vientiane. This growing village had a 3-room school which was in a dilapidated condition. Now, thanks to you and all our donors a 5-classroom school, big enough to accommodate 100 students  has been constructed. The school has electricity, running water from a deep well water pump and sanitary washrooms. The villagers have participated fully in the building of this particular school. Their efforts plus favourable weather conditions and the cost-cutting construction techniques employed by our builder have allowed us to reduce the cost of this construction – from $65,000 to $55,000 CAD. With construction complete the inauguration was hosted in December 2019.

More updates to come…

Project #10: Khonevat Primary School

For Project Number 10 we are heading to Xaisomboun province: Khonvat village is located within the Longxan district and is approximately 250 km northwest of Vientiane. Ban Khonvat has a population of 2,939 with 517 households made up of 75% ethnic Hmong, 10% Mien and 15% other ethnic groups including lower land Lao.

Khonvat primary school currently has 381 students from Grade 1 to 5 mostly of the Hmong and Mien ethnic minorities. There are two school buildings one of which is in such bad repair that it cannot be used. That means 201 students are forced to attend schools in neighbouring villages.

Working with the local community SKL will build a new school which will include 7 classrooms, furniture, clean water supply, electricity and sanitary washrooms for all 381 students. Villagers will contribute in the construction and as is our usual practice. Furthermore, villagers and local authorities will also participate in preventive maintenance of the school buildings after construction.

Total cost is estimated at $85,000 of which we have raised $14, 250 towards this project. With your help we can give students the future they deserve! Stay tuned for further details and photos.
